Employment Background Check

Most everyone that has a job has also had a background check for employment run before they were hired for the position. Employers have been running background checks on applicants for many years. It started out as a way to make sure the person had the education and work experience they claimed to have. There always has been and always will be people that exaggerate when it comes to their credentials as an attempt to be considered for a job they need or would like to have.

This happens even more today than ever before with so many people out of work. Still, it's important for the employer to hire people that truly have the experience they claim to have. Otherwise, it's not fair to the other workers and the person may not be able to perform the job. Depending on the position they're hired for, it could also pose a danger to their health and well-being along with anyone that works around them.

Today, employment background checks contain a lot more information about the person than they did a few years ago. This has a lot to do with the incident that happened on September 11th that made the world more aware of just how important security has become. When you consent to employee background checks today, it will still include your education and employment history but that's not all.

When the employer runs an employment background check, they can also pull up your driving record, credit history, military records, court records and in some cases even your medical history may be revealed. Depending on the type of check employment background search they choose to run, they could learn a lot more about your past than you ever thought possible. Still, there are many job positions that you won't be considered for if you don't give your consent, even if you don't feel comfortable making your past available for the employer to view.

Hiring someone with a bad background history could prove to be devastating to a company. It could allow someone with ill intentions to be in a position of authority in which they can do lots of harm. Employers are responsible for their workers to a certain degree and they are expected to make good informed decisions, which include hiring good responsible people for the jobs available.

There are a number of negligent hiring cases that are the direct result of the company not doing a background check on certain employees before hiring them. Some of these people had a history of sexual assault, embezzlement, murder and other serious charges. There are cases where someone was hired in a position in which they had access to children that were raped and assaulted. There are also cases in which other employees or someone associated with the company were murder by an employee that was not properly screened.

It's easy to understand the importance of background checks for employment when you take a look at a few of these negligent hiring cases. Companies cannot afford to be held responsible for the actions of people who have a violent history. There will always be a need for employers to run an employment background check on anyone that is seeking employment and this need will probably increase even more in the future.
